Qualia Coffee

by Fitzpatrick Group

In 2009 Qualia Coffee was built on the philosophy that coffee should be treated like fresh produce rather than a bulk good.  By roasting and brewing in-house, the roasters at Qualia can focus on their coffee’s taste and quality, rather than shelf life.  This, along with over 400 flavor compounds, enables them to elevate the coffee drinking experience to a new level of enjoyment, similar to that of fine wines.

This full-service coffee house takes great pride in offering some of the freshest coffee in Washington, DC.  Qualia boasts a wide variety of beans from around the world, all of which are roasted in house daily at their Petworth location.  In addition to coffee, they serve baked goods from Paisely Fig and Whatsa Bagel.  You may also find their coffee at local farmers markets in Arlington and Columbia Heights.  Stop by and try their coffee for yourself this Saturday before you start your shopping.  You may need the caffeine!

Ivy and Coney

by Fitzpatrick Group

Ivy and Coney is a small neighborhood bar located in the Shaw neighborhood in Washington, DC.  It’s a place for Chicago and Detroit natives to hang out and get a taste of home, and for others to try a sample of what the owners’ hometowns have to offer.  Speaking of the owners, Josh Saltzman, Chris Powers, and Adam Fry all bring their individual talents to the business.  Josh comes from the food truck business, Chris brings his coney dogs from Detroit, and Adam offers his bartending and business skills to help create this neighborhood bar.  Some notable food items on their menu include Chicago-style and Detroit coney-style hot dogs, Italian beefs, peanuts, and cracker jacks.  Beer is always on tap, and the bar has a few select spirits and sodas as well.
Something unique to this sports bar is that people can reserve a liquor locker that allows regular customers to prepurchase thousands of different labels at discounted rates, which are stored on site and ready to be served by the Ivy and Coney staff.  But their main focus at Ivy and Coney is to create a friendly bar with cheap and simple food and drinks, sports, music, and good conversation.  Come on in after a long day of shopping this Small Business Saturday and relax as you get to know your friendly neighborhood bartenders.

Denizens Brewing Company

by Fitzpatrick Group
This local brewing company is all about its name, “Denizens,” which means regular, homegrown, local, newcomer.  They live by the belief that we are all unified by beer.  It is also important to them that their products are made locally so everyone can enjoy fresh, local craft beer.  Additionally, Denizens aims to make their brewery a gathering place for the community where everyone is welcome in their two-story taproom and large beer garden.  Denizens brews their beer in downtown Silver Spring and they carry many Maryland products, including locally produced wine, mead, and cider.
Denizens was founded in 2014 by Emily Bruno and Julie Verratti, along with their brother-in-law Jeff Ramirez, who spent time in the Colorado and Pennsylvania beer scenes.  Their goal was to create an environment where everyone felt welcome to grab a beer, and they succeeded.  They worked with local government and community leaders to remove prohibition-era barriers and allow them to expand their beer production and distribution.  Today, Denizens is the only woman and minority owned and operated brewery in Maryland.  So next time you’re in the area, pull up a chair and enjoy a beer at this fun, local brewery.

New Columbia Distillery

by Fitzpatrick Group
Founded in 2011, New Columbia Distillery is the first distillery in Washington, DC in a century.  It’s owned by Michael Lowe and his wife, Melissa Kroning, along with John Uselton and his wife, Elizabeth Lowe.  John has worked for years in various capacities in the restaurant business while Michael has spent time in the Navy, as well as in private DC law firms before becoming interested in distilling.  They did a brief apprenticeship before opening their distillery in a 90-year-old warehouse on New York Ave.  They soon created their signature Green Hat Gin, and the rest is history.
Green Hat Gin was named after George Cassiday, who returned from World War I and needed a job.  During this prohibition era, he started supplying clients on Capitol Hill with bootleg liquor.  He got away with his business for awhile, until his luck finally ran out and he was arrested wearing his signature green felt hat.  From that point on, Cassiday was known as “The Man in the Green Hat.”  Eventually, he exposed the hypocritical lawmakers who didn’t abide by their own rules and he helped initiate the repeal.  Now that you know the history, you should stop by and try some of New Columbia’s signature Green Hat Gin!

El Rey

by Fitzpatrick Group
El Rey describes itself as a taqueria and Mexican beer garden that sells tacos and tequila from a space created from shipping containers.  Their patio, with a retractable roof, offers a cool spot to hang out on a nice night.  They are known for their delicious tacos, but their drinks, including margaritas and other cocktails, beer, wine, and sangria, are even better.

You can book your next party, company happy hour, or other private event at this hip venue, or just come out to enjoy a drink or Sunday brunch.  The menu at El Rey includes a selection of tacos, nachos, tamales, and more.  Take advantage of the bottomless drinks, including mimosas, along with a breakfast burrito during their weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.  So be sure to keep this place in mind as a place to refuel while you’re doing your Small Business Saturday shopping!
