The second largest income generator in Northwest Washington D.C. is tourism, which accounts for $4.8 billion in revenue from the approximately 19 million visitors each day. Additionally, the city is home to a myriad of law firms, lobbyists, non-profits and independent contractors. Schools, Health, Transportation

The 45,000 school aged students living in the capital area are served by the District of Columbia School District’s 6,500 teachers, administrators and support staff. The district has recently unveiled a five year capital improvement plan for the district that will result in better schools for all students by 2017.

For higher education, Northwest Washington D.C. offers many college campuses. Such campuses include American University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia.

The staff and attendants of no fewer than fifteen local hospitals stand ready to administer to the health needs of the community including: George Washington Medical Center, Georgetown University Hospital, Howard University Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital and Washington Hospital Center just to name a few.

Transportation is facilitated by an efficient and well maintained transit agency known as the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, which operates the city’s rapid transit system, the Metrobus, and the Washington Metro. With 80% of the city’s neighborhoods car independent, well over half of the population walks, rides a bike, or takes public transportation to get to their jobs each morning.
